Sometimes I want to watercolor
Without a plan
Without guidance
Sometimes I want to follow the water
Watch it flow
Lose Control & Just Exist
Sometimes I want to disassemble the pieces
Put them back together
See how the moment is built
Sometimes I want to fly in the night with Owl
Layering abstraction into existence
Sometimes I want to paint
Focusing on every element
Depicting intricacies
Sometimes I want to run wild with Fox
Quietly Knowing & Playfully Waiting
Sometimes I just want to be a pollinator
Flapping & Dancing
Mixture through movement
Sometimes I want to live inside a color wheel
Spinning through pigments
A rainbow existence
Sometimes I get lost in who I am
& always I am me
Abby McCullough is a mixed-media artist based in Ithaca, NY.
Abby finds inspiration in the natural world, with birds and amphibians being frequent and favorite subjects in their work. She graduated from Earlham College in 2017 with a BA in Studio Art. Abby’s senior show From Flesh to Forgotten highlighted the plight of endangered species. Following graduation, Abby was commissioned to create two additional series permanently on display in Earlham College’s Biology Building and May-Crossen Student Commons.
Abby’s work has been exhibited in the Richmond Art Museum and the Whitewater Valley Art Gallery. She received Richmond Art Museum’s Donna Spears Merit Award for work in watercolor & cut paper. Abby’s work has been shown in online group exhibitions with Crafting the Future and Late Bloomers Clvb. They were also selected to participate in artist showcases at Las Laguna Art Gallery and ShockBoxx Gallery.
Abby is working to combine their love for dry-brush watercolor with wet-on-wet techniques and layering of cut paper. Working in mixed media allows Abby to create pieces that unite elements of realism and abstraction to formulate a surreal depiction of the natural world.
If Abby isn’t making art, you can find them playing soccer, building playlists, sewing pants, or looking for frogs in the woods.
